Brigham A. McCown joined Alyeska Pipeline Service Company as president in January 2020. With roots in the rural Appalachian area of Southern Ohio, McCown went from being a barge company laborer to serving as a naval aviator to running the federal agency responsible for energy transportation.
McCown has over three decades of executive management, legal, and operational experience in the energy, infrastructure and transportation industries. He is a domestic and foreign policy expert who has held senior posts in three United States presidential administrations, advised multiple presidential campaigns, and held key positions on two presidential transition teams. He has served under three cabinet secretaries from both major political parties.
In his recent position as chairman and CEO of Nouveau Consulting, he advised on matters pertaining to federal security and safety regulations. He is also chairman and founder of the Alliance for Innovation and Infrastructure, a non-partisan think tank leveraging innovation to improve infrastructure safety.
McCown has held several posts at the U.S. Department of Transportation, most recently serving as current Secretary Elaine Chao’s Senior Advisor for surface transportation programs. He was the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) first deputy administrator and served as the first general counsel of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Prior to federal service McCown was a member of a large international law firm. In 2013, he retired from the U.S. Navy after 25 years of combined active and reserve service and also holds an honorary commission of Rear Admiral in the United States Maritime Administration.
He also sits on several boards and committees including the federal government's Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee and taught ethics, law, and foreign policy at Miami University (Ohio). He is the second company president hired as an Alyeska employee following Vice Admiral Thomas Barrett, USCG (Ret.), who was brought on in January 2011.
McCown and his wife of more than 25 years, Jacquelynn, have three sons: Tucker, who lives in Bozeman, Montana; William, a student at Miami University (Ohio); and Charles, a teenager.
